Kinmen is located off the southeastern
coast of Fujian Province in Xiamen Bay at the outlet to the Jiulong
River. This area includes Kinmen Island, Liehyu (also known as Little
Kinmen), DaDan, and ErDan, of a total of twelve islands and islets.
These islands and islets cover an area of 150 square kilometers.
To the west, at a distance of about 10 kilometers, is the Xiamen
outport. To the east, at a distance of 277 kilometers, is Taiwan.
This area is approximately at the same latitude as the Taichung
area.
Kinmen National Park includes
five areas: Taiwu Mountain, Guningtou, Gugang, Mashan Hill and
Lieyu, and covers an area of 3,780 hectares (or about one-fourth
of the combined area of Kinmen and Little Kinmen islands).
Kinmen borders on mainland China, so the climate is influenced
by both land and ocean. In addition, there are no tall mountains
to block the wind. In this area, the four seasons are distinct.
The average yearly temperature is about 21 degrees Celsius,
with warm days and cool nights typical of an island climate.
Summer is the rainy season while the winter is relatively
dry. Yearly rainfall is only about 1,000 millimeters and evaporation
level is about 1,750 millimeters. In the spring (March, April)
there is much fog. In May and June there is much rain. Fall
and winter are drier and colder.
