Kinmen National Park to begin removing illegal fishing nets from Ci Lake wetland

To protect the ecological environment of Ci Lake wetland and avoid nets affecting bird activity, Kinmen National Park will carry out checking for and removal of illegal nets with the Kinmen branch of the National Park Police Corps. The aim is to reduce the overexploitation of Ci Lake’s aquatic resources so that ecological resources can be sustainably managed.

Ci Lake wetland is rich in fish, shrimp and other water creatures and so attracts many water birds, and it is also an important habitat for many winter migrant birds. It is a well-known spot for birdwatching. The area between Shuangli Lake and Ci Lake is also a hot spot for otter activity. Ci Lake is also a nursey for migratory fish. If the natural ecological environment is damaged by overexploitation, the balance of the wetland food chain will be upset and the survival of species that live in the wetland will be threatened. Also, placing nets infringes on the habitat of birds and animals and sometimes causes injury when wild animals get caught up in nets.

The Kinmen National Park Administration (KNPA) stated that, for a long time, a small number of people have placed nets in Ci Lake to catch shrimp, crabs, and fish. Such behavior is prohibited under Paragraph 2 of Article 13 of the National Park Act: “Hunting of animals or catching of fish and other aquatic creatures is forbidden,” therefore the illegal nets will be removed from Ci Lake. The HQ also called on people not to place nets or illegally catch fish in Ci Lake so that the wetland ecology of Ci Lake can be managed sustainably.
