Kinmen National Park calls on people to stop setting off firecrackers to avoid scaring great cormorants

In response to a post on social media about visitors setting off firecrackers in the Ci Lake area, Kinmen National Park Headquarters has enhanced patrols with the police to stop such behavior. This behavior is in breach of the National Park Act and is subject to a fine up to NT$3000.

Great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) are winter migrants that arrive in Kinmen successively from October every year to spend the winter. This is the largest colony of winter migrant great cormorants in East Asia and a focus species for Kinmen ecological tourism and biodiversity conservation. At dusk every night, a magnificent sight is created as thousands of great cormorants fly back to their roosts in a “V” or a straight line formation against the cloudy sky for the night, attracting large numbers of visitors. The main great cormorant habitats are Ci Lake, Yangming Lake and Xi Lake.

Setting off firecrackers negatively affects the ecology and Ci Lake is a precious wetland habitat. Kinmen National Park HQ calls on Kinmen locals and visitors to show civic literacy, protect the environment and jointly build a friendly ecological environment.
