Kinmen National Park Headquarters, National Park Service removes illegal fishing nets from time to time to maintain the ecology of Cihu Wetland

To protect the ecology of Cihu Wetland, the Kinmen National Park Headquarters, National Park Service (the Headquarters) launched the "2023 Annual Cihu Special Scenic Area Illegal Net Equipment Investigation and Promotion Work Plan.” In the afternoon of March 7, in collaboration with the Kinmen 4th Corps of the Special Police 7th Headquarters of the National Police Agency, MOI, the Headquarters team carried out the investigation and punishment of illegal nets for the first time this year, reducing human fishing activities to maintain the habitat of wild birds.

Cihu is a nationally important wetland with extremely rich ecological resources. It attracts many migratory waterbirds that spend the winter or transit here every autumn and winter. The bird populations in Cihu play a crucial role in the overall bird ecosystem in Kinmen, drawing the attention of numerous bird watchers. Unfortunately, some individuals set up nets indiscriminately in Cihu, significantly impacting the wetland's ecology. The Headquarters collaborates with the police annually to investigate and address these illegal nets, aiming to effectively preserve the Cihu Wetland environment and enable sustainable management of ecological resources.

The Headquarters stated that Cihu Wetland is located in the National Park Special Scenic Area. According to Article 13, Paragraph 2 of the National Park Act: "It is prohibited to hunt animals or catch fish" and Article 25, Paragraph 5 of the Wetland Conservation Act: " It is prohibited to harass, poison, hunt, abuse, or kill wild animals within the scope of important wetlands." In order to enable the sustainable management and development of wetland environmental resources, we will continue to strengthen patrols of Cihu's important wetlands, and we also call on the public to abide by the regulations and protect the precious wetland ecology.
