Stranded spot-billed duck ducklings grow up healthy Released by Kinmen National Park Headquarters and Guning Elementary School students and teachers

In early May, 11, 2022 spot-billed duck (Anas poecilorhyncha) ducklings were found stranded in a ditch in the restricted are on Kinmen Airport. After three months of care by Kinmen Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue Association and learning how to swim and fly, the ducklings grew up and replaced their yellow duckling feathers with a waterproof adult plumage. Three birds met the standard for release and were successfully released today (12) onto Shuangli Lake by director of Kinmen National Park HQ Chen Rui-chang, director of the Department of Construction of Kinmen County Government Lee You-chung, director of the Kinmen Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue Association Chen Shu-ting, principal of Guning Elementary School Huang Yun-yun and the students and teachers of Guning Elementary School. The ducks carry the best wishes of many people as they live in the wild.

After the wild release, Kinmen National Park HQ conducted environmental education and conservation advocacy from which the children participating in the release learned a lot, saying this was the first time they had been so close to spot-billed ducks. The HQ thanked the students and teachers of Guning Elementary School for attaching importance to and promoting ecological conservation.

Kinmen National Park HQ said that spring and summer in the reproduction period for birds and people can easily come across chicks that are learning to fly or have fallen from the nest. It called on people to put the chicks back in the next or put them in a safe place and observe to see whether their parents take them away; if the parents don’t appear or the chicks are clearly injured or weak and human intervention is needed, they can call the HQ on 082-313173 or Kinmen Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue Association on 082-333587.
