Results Announced for 2024 Kinmen National Park Homestay and Shop Evaluation — A New Model for Sustainable Tourism

To enhance the reuse and revitalization of traditional buildings and former military sites, as well as to strengthen the management capabilities of local homestay and shop operators and promote public-private partnerships for the joint preservation of Kinmen's cultural heritage, Kinmen National Park Headquarters (the HQ) under the Ministry of the Interior's National Park Service has, since 2009, has implemented a guidance and evaluation program for the homestays and shops it leases out. The program aims to enhance service quality, implement eco-friendly practices, such as reducing plastic use, and promote sustainable tourism. Each year, outstanding operators are recognized with Gold and Silver Awards.

According to the HQ, the 2024 evaluation included 72 homestays and 14 shops. After on-site visits and comprehensive assessments by evaluation committees, all participants passed, and several were selected for Gold and Silver Quality Awards in recognition of their excellence.

The award-winning homestays were commended for their meticulous preservation of traditional architecture and the creative, tasteful decoration of their rooms and common areas. As well as providing excellent hospitality services, these homestay operators actively promote eco-cycling tours, participate in community affairs, and organize diverse cultural activities such as concerts, theatrical performances, children's art camps, parent-child educational workshops, and local heritage tours, allowing guests to engage with Kinmen's rich culture and ecology deeply.

The award-winning shops stood out for offering delicious meals made with local Kinmen ingredients and for developing a range of cultural and creative products that reflect Kinmen's unique identity. These businesses have enthusiastically embraced plastic reduction efforts, promoted the use of the "Otter Gold Cup" (a reusable cup), and even introduced their own circular cup systems. One creative highlight includes the transformation of old military bunkers into art and cultural exhibition spaces, blending historical reuse with ecological values in truly innovative ways. The HQ emphasized that the continued promotion of sustainable business models for homestays and shops will help drive local economic development, enhance community consensus, and pass on settlement culture to ensure the preservation and revitalization of Kinmen's traditional settlements and military sites. These efforts are also aligned with Taiwan's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
