Tongqiang Mountain Fort Grand Opening Creates A New Highlight Battle Historical Site in the Gugang Area
The Kinmen National Park Headquarters (the HQ) under the Ministry of the Interior's National Park Service held the opening ceremony of the "Tongqiang Mountain Fort" on May 27, 2025. Tongqiang Mountain Fort is the 47th site opened by the HQ. The restoration and opening of this camp not only marks a new highlight in the battle historical sites of the Gugang area but also symbolizes the HQ's commitment to the preservation and maintenance of battle history sites.
Tongqiang Mountain Fort, also known as the W057 point, is an imposing fortress constructed from granite blocks. Within the site, there are barracks, warehouses, and a two-story tunnel structure. One of the tunnel exits still retains the characters "Honesty," as well as inscriptions of "Year 49 of the Republic of China" (1960) and "Built by all officers and soldiers of the 1st Platoon, 1st Company, 174th Regiment, 58th Army Division," confirming the construction date and the unit responsible, and showing its high preservation value.
In its early years, Tongqiang Mountain Fort was one of the demonstration points for protective shooting by the Kinmen Defense Command. It was equipped with 60mm mortars, 50 caliber machine guns, 57mm anti-tank guns, and two 105mm howitzers, demonstrating powerful firepower. After undergoing modifications through different eras, the camp now possesses a complex underground tunnel network, embodying the strategic principle of "concealing combat power underground." This restoration, combined with precious materials provided by veteran Mr. Wang Jian-yuan, who served here, including photos and oral histories from that time, allows the grandeur of this "Southern Sea Stronghold" to be vividly revived.
The HQ noted that today's opening ceremony included tours led by volunteer guide Colonel Fan Jiang-hui, a former Personnel Administration Director of the Kinmen Defense Command. Colonel Fan, who is very familiar with military history, weapon operation, and the strategic layout of the site, also served as a company commander in the Army's 158th Infantry Division. The same unit built Tongqiang Mountain Fort, known as the "Honesty" troops. His professional explanation provided visitors with a deeper understanding of the campground's defensive principles and the use of its weaponry.
The Gugang Community Development Association simultaneously invited five veterans who served in the Zhaishan Company — Captain Lin Qi-yang, Captain Wang Pei-liang, Sergeant Chen Guo-rong, Sergeant Lin Bo-han, and Private First Class Wang Jian-yuan — to return. Wang Jianyuan recalled the days stationed at Tongqiang Mountain Fort from 1991 to 1993, frequently using the 60mm mortars and 50 caliber machine guns to drive away intruding fishing boats. The defensive area of the Zhaishan Company covered points W051 to W057 and two ambush posts at 26 and Chishan. Wang supported all points within the company and once used up 200 phone cards during his military service in Kinmen. Returning to Tongqiang Mountain Fort evoked a range of emotions. Although the wartime missions were challenging, the camaraderie and shared hardships with his brothers left many deep memories.
The HQ stated that to connect the vital battle and cultural historical sites in the Gugang area, they also designed the "Otter's Walk Gugang" Kinmen National Park Gugang Area Historical Exploration, a pop-world real-world puzzle game. It promotes the "Gugang Tower," "Gugang Settlement," "Zhaishan Tunnel," "Tongqiang Mountain Fort," and "Liangshan Guanzhi Trail" to the public in a lively and engaging way. After collecting game props, participants can enjoy discounts at cooperating stores. The public is warmly encouraged to participate.
