Protecting forest ecological reserves: Kinmen National Park Headquarters continues to promote Zhongshan Forest afforestation

On the eve of Tree-planting Festival, on March 10, Kinmen National Park HQ staff planted around 800 native trees including camphor (Camphora officinarum), tallow (Sapium sebiferum), pond spice (Litsea glutinosa), fragrant pittosporum (Pittosporum pentandrum), Chinese abelia (Abelia chinensis), Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana Dence) and Chinese hackberry (Celtis sinensis), through forest tidying and tree planting, restoring the forest ecological resources of Zhongshan Forest.

Kinmen National Park HQ said that Zhongshan Forest has rich forest resources and natural landscape and has complete children’s play facilities and cycling path, and has always been a popular spot for family recreation. In recent years, Pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) has caused many pine trees there to slowly die. To stop the spread of disease, the HQ cut down affected trees, leaving some areas open forest land. The trees planted this time were saplings of native species nurtured by the HQ’s nursery over a long period. The afforestation method of planting suitable trees on suitable land and layered forest was used to increase forest coverage rate and improve the scenery, creating an excellent and pleasing recreation environment.
