Why was the Zhaishan Tunnel built? How was it constructed? What are the characteristics?

1.Due to the cross-strait tension of the August 23rd Artillery Battle in 1958, the military therefore actively strengthened military fortifications for the preparation of further strategic offensive and defensive measures. The tunnel was therefore built.

2.The excavation of the Zhaishan Tunnel was in 1963, using small amounts of explosive powder and by manpower. Constructions continued 24 hours around the clock with three shifts. The construction took 3 years of time.

3.Excavation of the Zhaishan Tunnel was from a single piece of granite gneiss, and therefore the tunnel is very strong. The tunnel can be divided into two parts, the tunnel and water channel. The tunnel's total length is about 101m, width 6m, and height 3.5m. The water channel forms an A-shaped pattern, with a total length about 357m, width 8m, and can accommodate 42 small boats. The walls of the water channel are painted with dock numbers, where the water channel served as a supplement and rotating directions of landing boats. Due to sediment deposition, the military value was reduced, and was abandoned in 1986.
